15" Air vs 13" Air — which makes sense?
The 15" gives you a substantially larger workspace (15.3" vs 13.6") at the cost of about 280g extra weight. Pick 15" if you regularly work with spreadsheets, multiple documents side-by-side, or creative apps. Pick 13" if portability matters most. Performance is identical — same M5, same RAM/storage options.
Air 15" or Pro 14"?
Air 15" gives you a bigger screen, fanless silent operation, and lighter weight, with the standard M5 chip. Pro 14" has a brighter ProMotion XDR display, more sustained performance under heavy loads, and offers M5 Pro/Max configurations. For most users, Air 15" is the better daily-driver; pros doing video editing or heavy compute should look at the Pro.
How much memory should I get?
16 GB is fine for everyday work and even moderate Lightroom or Final Cut. Get 24 GB if you keep dozens of browser tabs and apps open simultaneously, or if you do regular video editing. 32 GB is for heavy professional workflows.
What's the difference between M4 and M5?
M5 introduces Neural Accelerators in every GPU core — a major leap for AI performance (around 3.5× faster than M4 on AI workloads). CPU and GPU performance also step up by roughly 15-20%. Battery life is unchanged. Major upgrade if you do AI work; modest if you don't.
Can I upgrade memory or storage later?
No. Both are soldered to the logic board on Apple silicon Macs. Buy the configuration you'll want for the next 4-5 years — that's why the memory question above matters.
